I always believe in the fact that experience is the best teacher. Experience or anubhava may be both good and bad. But the outcome of it is totally dependent on how we perceive it. Never loose hope or feel offended when something bad happens to you. Also try to share the happiness with the people around you when something amazing happens to you. Always be you, no matter what the situation is. Through this blog I would like to pen down my experiences be it some incident which thought me a life-lesson, a book review or a few words of wisdom or morals which I believe in or follow. With a flicker of hope that my words will some day reach you and bring about some change in your life I am starting this blog. All your lovely comments are going to be considered and valued. Last but not the least “always try to be the better version of yourself.”

Living green: My everyday eco-friendly habits
Plastic waste is one of our generation’s most alarming environmental challenges, impacting human health and the environment. While the problem seems overwhelming and difficult to tackle, meaningful changes often start at the personal level, like home. In this post, I would like to share some of the sustainable options I’ve recently adopted- simple actions that make a difference.
- Using reusable steel straws instead of single-use plastic straws
Mangalore’s scorching heat made me rely on tender coconut, buttermilk, lassi, and fruit juices, which I often consumed using single-use plastic straws. Studies have shown that 50% of manufactured plastic is disposed of after a single use. Researchers have also found that plastic straws contribute about 1.53 × 10^5 tons of plastic waste into the environment every year. Realizing the amount of plastic I contributed to the existing garbage pile, I switched to steel straws, which are portable, hygienic, easy to clean, reusable, recyclable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly. Plastic straws contain harmful chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA), which causes severe health hazards.

2. Converting old clothes into carry bags for shopping
My mother, who also believes in and practices sustainable living, stitches beautiful carry bags out of leftover or old clothes. Unlike plastic bags, which take years to decompose, these are durable, reusable, and eco-friendly, as they do not contribute to pollution.

3. Using a menstrual cup – towards a green period
Studies in the US revealed that around 1.8 billion women menstruate every month. The most commonly used menstrual products, such as sanitary pads, tampons, etc., which are high in plastic, contribute to 240000 tons of solid waste annually (Mouhanna et al., 2023). Disposing of the period product packing is another concern, and studies have shown that 400 pounds of period product packing is thrown out per menstruator per lifetime (Harrison et al., 2022).
A menstrual cup is a reusable feminine product made out of medical-grade silicone that is inserted into the vagina and is said to have the lowest environmental.
During her menstrual cycle, a woman typically uses about 12 to 16 pads, costing between 8 and 15 rupees. This results in an expense of approximately 150 to 200 rupees per cycle, leading to an annual cost of around 2,500, depending on the brand and quantity of pads used.
In contrast, a menstrual cup is a one-time investment that costs about 700 rupees and can last between 5 to 10 years. The advantage of using a menstrual cup is that it is safe, reusable, and provides protection for up to 12 hours, though cleaning it every 4 hours. Menstrual cups are the better alternative to single-use menstrual hygiene products as they reduce the amount of trash that goes into landfills.

Embracing sustainable living is about making mindful choices, not drastic changes. Whether carrying your shopping bag or switching to a reusable product, every small step counts.I see sustainability not as a sacrifice but as a lifestyle—a conscious choice we can all make. I hope my story inspires you to begin your journey toward greener living. Let’s build a community where sustainable decisions become the norm, not the exception.

Chasing Waterfalls: A Journey of Discovery
After moving to a new city, I realized that exploring various places in and around my location is the best way to gain a deeper understanding of the city, its culture, and its people.

I’m thrilled to have found the perfect travel buddies who share my passion for discovery. On the weekend, we spontaneously decided to visit a nearby waterfall, 25km from my home, after our temple visit plans fell through at the last minute.
We took a local bus towards Uppinangadi via Adyar. Unfamiliar with the area, we got off one stop too early and walked extra. When we reached the junction to turn left (as per Google Maps, 500m to the falls), we stumbled upon an auto stand. The auto drivers, familiar with the route, offered to help. Confident in their expertise, we opted for the auto to reach the falls.
The auto driver dropped us at a stunning viewpoint and, when we asked him about the waterfall’s location, he directed us to check with the boys standing nearby, who would show us the way. He then immediately left after collecting the auto fare.

Although awestruck by the beautiful view, we were disappointed not to find any sign of the waterfall. We were also unhappy with the driver who offered to guide us to the waterfall but left us midway. We had two choices in front of us, either to go back without seeing the waterfall or gather some courage and move forward to see where exactly the falls is located. Determined to see it, we chose the latter. The narrow, steep path, surrounded by forest and unfamiliar terrain, made us question our decision. But, as they say, “difficult paths lead to beautiful destinations.” And indeed, we finally reached the breathtaking waterfall, a true wonderland.

The biggest takeaway from this trip is, we all are given plenty of opportunities and it’s up to us to make use of them. As always new opportunities bring in new obstacles. All we have to do is trust the process and keep moving, because the end result is worth all the effort that goes in.

And traveling is the best form of self discovery 🙂

A deep drive into 2023’s journey
If I was to describe the year 2023, then I would say it as a year of milestones. However the year has been quite tricky with lots of setbacks and failures. Nevertheless, there were many learnings and takeaways from each and every single instance and experience encountered.
One of the important events of the year was the completion of my post graduation. As a part of my PG curriculum, I got to attend different events, meet various dignitaries, visit various organizations across the city and learn from the best of the best mentors during fieldwork.
The year was also about understanding the true colors of people around me for who I am extremely grateful for teaching the greatest life lessons and making me stronger to face the challenges life throws upon. The year was about marking an end to relationships with people with deceptive masks and at the same time spending the best time with reliable ones. It was during this year where beautiful relationships bloomed, spreading the fragrance of love and trust.
As always, many times, despite meticulous planning, things never worked the way I wanted it to be. Embracing and learning from the failures and thinking of the best way of moving forward kept me sane and motivated. A large portion of my time was also spent on correcting my flaws along with putting constant efforts to upskill myself.
Talking about my extracurricular activities, the year was more about performing in front of the crowd and getting the on stage experience along with classroom learning. I also got an opportunity to interact and learn from the most skillful yakshagana artists.
While all this happened, one of the biggest mistakes which I committed was ignoring my lifestyle, especially the physical activities and the sleep which resulted in falling sick several times this year. Clean eating helped in reducing the intensity of the illness. Therefore one of the greatest realizations of this year is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and make it the top priority over other things.
As I step into the new year, with the same enthusiasm to learn, explore, experiment and experience I am eagerly waiting for what life has in its store!! Additionally my complete focus will be on lifestyle modification and prioritizing health over other things.
Sometimes all you need is a gentle push!
From the time I’ve heard of menstrual cups and read a ton of reviews from users, I have always wanted to switch to it. Few of the obvious reasons were the eco friendly, pocket friendly and rash free periods. But at the same time, the thought of inserting something into the vagina sounded extremely scary. After procrastinating for two years, a heavy period experience, untidy college washrooms and the difficulty to clean up myself every now and then when at work motivated me to switch to a menstrual cup.
A menstrual cup is a reusable feminine hygiene product. It’s a small, flexible funnel shaped cup made of rubber or silicone that you insert into your vagina to catch and collect menstrual fluid. (www.healthline.com)

How to use a menstrual cup? And some tips for first time users:
- Measuring your cervix and understanding the structure of your body is necessary and the first thing one should do before purchasing the cup.
- Finding the right size cup is necessary. The cup comes in different sizes for different age groups of people and for the ones who have given birth vaginally. By considering all these factors, purchase the one that is suitable for you.
- Finding a comfortable and suitable position for inserting the cup is necessary. For most people, the squat(complete squat) position works as it keeps the muscles relaxed. For few of them, keeping the leg on a raised platform works.
- Selecting the right kind of fold makes the insertion easier. There are different ways of folding the cup like c fold, 7 fold/ triangular fold , punch down fold and many more. For most of us triangular/ 7 fold or punch down fold works as the tip of the cup becomes small in dimension and hence it will be easier to insert.
- Keeping yourself relaxed is highly important while you insert the cup. Amidst all the fear, anxiety and ambiguity(which are very common), keeping oneself relaxed is necessary as it helps in loosening of muscles and makes insertion easier.
- While inserting the cup make sure that you have sterilized the cup( follow the instructions given in the package) and your hands are clean. Sterilizing the cup makes it softer and easier to insert.
- Make sure that you insert the cup at an angle of 45° and not straight as our body is structured in that way.
- Once when you insert the cup ensure that it’s completely inside and has popped up inside your body. The popping sound may not be evidently heard but you can make sure that it has opened up by running your fingers around the base. In case the cup has not opened, gently rotate it with the help of the stem of the cup. The cup when opened creates a suction seal inside and collects the menstrual blood. The tip should not protrude after insertion of the cup.
- One should not feel any kind of discomfort after inserting the cup. One should also not feel that there’s something inside your body after inserting the cup. This is an indication of the cup being properly inserted.
- If you are using the cup for the first time, try inserting it on the day when you have heavy flow. Menstrual blood acts as a natural lubricant and eases the process of insertion.
- While removing the cup, use the squat position and try to locate the tip. With the help of the tip, grab its base. Now gently squeeze the base to release the suction seal created and slowly remove the cup by pulling. This is quite a tricky task till you get comfortable with the cup. Make sure that your hands are clean while you do this.
- Every time when you remove the cup, wash it with running water or the solution given along with the cup.
- After completion of the cycle, clean and sterilize the cup before storing it.
Advantages of using a Menstrual cup:
- It is Eco friendly and Pocket friendly: A woman roughly uses 12-20 pads in a cycle and the average cost of one pad is roughly around 8-15 rupees which means she spends around 100-200 rupees during one cycle. The average amount in a year would be around 1200-2400 rupees. The menstrual cup is a one time investment wherein you will spend roughly about 500-800 bucks and the cup lasts for 5-10 years. Sanitary waste is one of the major sources of waste in our country. Every year about 33.6 crore women menstruate out of which 12.1 crore women use disposable sanitary napkins. That means an average of 12,30,00,000 sanitary napkins go into trash every year. Since sanitary pads are made of polymers and non biodegradable plastics, it takes 500-800 years to decompose whereas a cup lasts for about 10 years and we can definitely cut down the amount of waste being generated.
- Rash free periods and the best part is that you’ll not feel the period flow.
- No fear of leakage and stains. The cup once inserted properly doesn’t create any leaks.
- A cup can give protection up to 12 hours (depending on your flow). Therefore one need not have to worry about cleaning oneself every now and then.
- Portable and reusable. Cup is small in size, light in weight and is easier to carry.
In spite of doing a thorough research on menstrual cups, most of us still have a ton of queries and will be ambiguous regarding its usage. Initially when I bought the cup, I thought I would be able to insert the cup in a single go. But to be honest, it took me around 5 months just to figure out a way to insert the cup and two more cycles to get a proper hold on its usage!!(Well, it might not be the same with your case. Some maybe able to get a good hold of it in the beginning itself ). The fear, confusion and dilemma are completely natural and going through these are inevitable. Watching a couple of YouTube tutorials will also help you to get a proper picture of the insertion and removal of the cup. Initially few might find it tricky to remove the cup. But once you get hold on the usage of the cup, you’ll appreciate the comfort it gives during your menstrual cycle.

Sometimes all you need is a gentle push to move ahead in your life. I hope you have found this as a gentle push to push yourself to switch to a menstrual cup. For further queries, feel free to reach out to me through comments or write to me at anarghyatp@gmail.com.
Not to forget, I have been using a menstrual cup from a brand called comfy cup by Ms.Divya Gokarna. It is one such project which aims at women empowerment and supports the thought of “Atma Nirbhar Bharath”. The cups are made of medical grade silicone and are super comfortable, neither too hard, nor too soft and very easy to insert. You can check their website www.comfycup.in and reach out to them through 7349618782 for further details.
(A word of caution: If you are allergic to silicone or incase of any discomfort after wearing the cup, kindly reach out to your doctor)

The Kite Runner- one amazing read!
The kite runner written by Khaled Hosseini is absolutely a wonderful book and a must read for various reasons.I always believe that fanciest words don’t always enhance the quality of the story or narrative. The way a thought is put into words matters . It could be in the form of simile, metaphor, pun or a sentence itself. In this book, one can encounter plenty of such metaphors and the writing style is just phenomenal. I simply fell in love with the narration.
The entire story is about Amir, a sunni muslim and Hassan, a Shia muslim. The first half of the story is set in Afghanistan and one can see how badly the Hazra community is treated by the other community. Meanwhile you’ll also get to see the lifestyle of Afghanistans, the legacy of the country, the culture and beliefs of the people. Slowly the story shifts to the other part of the world and the later half is set in America.
A war forces people of Afghanistan to leave their motherland. Meanwhile, circumstances also separate Hassan and Amir. Amir, a teenage boy with a truckload of guilt, experiences a lot of chaos and the turmoil he’s going through is a significant part of this story. I don’t know if I should call this particular thing the brilliance of the author because instead of describing the physical battle, the conflict between guilt and necessity that’s taking place inside a human mind is spectacularly pictured. Nonetheless, you’ll get to see the post-war scenes and actual fighting in the second half of the story ( a bit of it in the first half too).
One can come across various historical events, religious issues, casteism, a bit of racism, communal riots, poverty, hunger, post war effects, sexual abuse, battle, harmony, disharmony, stringent rules imposed on Muslim women in this particular book. Also the human qualities that we always talk about – honesty, loyalty, bravery everything is pictured in the best possible way. Similarly the so called negative qualities like dishonesty, betrayal, cheating, taking advantage of opponents weakness are also included. Also emotional turmoil such as – guilt, trauma, insecurity is vividly described.
Now talking about the missing points or things that should have been included, I felt that the author could have elaborated on the issue between Hazra and sunni Muslims. Also the author could have mentioned the reason for the Russian attack and the Taliban attack. All these things are briefly mentioned and one will have to go through history for better understanding.
Nevertheless it’s a marvelous book, a book that will change your perspectives of life, a book that will churn your mind and of course leave you with a brilliant message – evil is temporary and it’s the good that always wins!!
Dosa – the soulmate of every South Indian
For every south Indian out there, Dosa, Dosai or Dose is not just a food, it’s an emotion! Having originated in south India, Dosa has become popular all over India. Talking about the origin of this amazing food, different historians, food critics have different opinions. Some say Dosa originated in Tamilnadu while the rest say it as udupi. The texture of Dosa is almost similar to crepe or pancakes but the taste and ingredients that go in varies.
Generally speaking, the main ingredients used to make Dosa are rice and urad dal. But other ingredients like poha, puffed rice, fenugreek seeds are also added.
In a typical south Indian household you can see multiple variants of dosas. Few of them are – neeru Dosa, masala Dosa, ghee Dosa, open Dosa, set Dosa, rava Dosa, majjige (buttermilk) Dosa, onion Dosa, ridge gourd Dosa, banana Dosa, raw banana Dosa, cucumber Dosa, wheat Dosa, jackfruit Dosa, raw jackfruit Dosa and the list goes on!

Preparation of Dosa is definitely not as easy as eating one :D. From measuring the ingredients in the right quantity to achieving the right consistency in batter, from fermenting the batter to heating your pan to the right temperature, everything is highly skilled ! Spreading the batter evenly is a whole new artistic work altogether.
Among all these Dosa variants, I am damn sure that masala Dosa would be everyone’s favourite. Crisp and hot Dosa loaded with ghee, coated with a spicy – tangy red chutney, filled with special potato subzi tingles our taste buds in the very first bite. Usually it’s served with chutney and piping hot Sambhar but tastes great as such.
Special mention about the neeru Dosa or thin crepes which is a special variant of Dosa that is prepared using only rice. Neeru Dosa is mangalorean and south canara people’s favourite food I would say. Neeru Dosa is usually served with coconut chutney or jaggery + grated coconut, vegetable sambar or non vegetarian curry.
Spreading of the neeru Dosa batter is totally different from the regular ones. I remember my mom and family members telling me that spreading neeru dosa is like achieving something great in cooking. So that’s a kind of certificate proving that you’re fit to cook and manage the kitchen.
Today, this traditional food has made an entry to the fast food world and you can see all the variants like pizza Dosa, cheese Dosa and many more!
In the beginning of this Dosa tale I mentioned that for most of the south Indians Dosa is an emotion. That’s because each and every one of us have some story or memory associated with it. Thus Dosa is not just something edible, it’s a mixture of culture, love, bonding and happiness, isn’t that amazing?

Mandala Art- A great stress buster
The pandemic has confined us to the four walls of the house. In fact it is very much needed right now to break the chain. So giving utmost importance to our health has become our priority now. But there is a dire need to take care of our mental health along with our physical health. The present uncertain situation and hectic schedule adds up more stress and anxiety.
Hobbies have always been considered as a go to stress buster. During tough times like this, it is important to indulge ourselves in some or the other kind of activities(indoors) . It could be singing, dancing, art, craft, cooking, writing, reading books, listening to Podcasts, Yoga or any indoor games. The ultimate aim should be to stay sane and content.

For me art has been the best companion and I definitely lose the track of time once when I settle down with my brushes and pens. Although painting is my niche and favourite art form, I equally love trying out different art variants. One such art form is mandala which I pick up when I have enough time or have a really long break. I have always wanted to do a full page mandala, something of this kind for the longest time now. Mandala is all about playing with random patterns, basic shapes, lines and dots. The best part is that you need only simple basic tools like pencil, compass, protractor, ruler and a micro tip pen along with a blank sheet of paper to draw a mandala. You need hell lot of patience of course 😀
So few things about mandala that I have always found fascinating :
- It acts as a great stress buster and keeps the anxiety away.
- It enhances one’s creativity. The more you draw, the more you come up with various patterns.
- Mandala has the ability to beautify the overall output of any art form. So mandala could be used as a tool in fusing various art forms.
- It increases concentration and boosts focus.
Some points to be kept in mind before trying your hands on mandala :
- You may not be able to achieve the patterns in the correct proportion for the first time. It comes by practice.
- It’s always better to go very slow, even if you are an expert in drawing. With the intention of finishing off the work quickly, if we rush there are chances of ruining the symmetry and the overall beauty of the artwork.
- If you are into this art form for the first time, it’s better to try it on a smaller sheet of paper with some basic, simple patterns . Once you are comfortable with the form, you can opt for complicated and intricate patterns on a larger sheet of paper.
- It’s always important to take frequent short breaks while drawing a mandala. At times you might end up getting a back pain or a numb or painful hand as you sit in the same position for a very long time. So taking breaks in between would be really helpful.
- Never feel bad if the work doesn’t turn out the way you expected it to be. Creativity has no bounds, the more you create, the more you learn and become better at. So keep the work going!
After reading this, if you feel like giving mandala art a try, then go ahead with your decision! I am damn sure that you’ll enjoy drawing mandalas 🙂
